Unlike most artists of his time, Rhyn was a plain air painter, who loved to draw and to paint nature. His favourite theme was to do tree portraitures. He painted them through out the seasons, and in almost a super realistic style. This style of painting every leaf of every branch, in such a microscopic detail, is the hallmark of his unique works. The tree we see in this remarkable painting is just budding, giving rise to new life, after the dead of winter.
